When thinking of JRR Tolkien and his Lord of the Rings mythos, Gnosticism or the Esoterica might not immediately come to anyone’s higher or lower mind.

But here at the Virtual Alexandria we always reveal there is a reality behind the reality. This interview presents the Gnosis of Tolkien and its stunning relation to Carl Jung, transcribed from a past episode with Lance Owens—ordained priest of the Ecclesia Gnostica, as well as the creator and editor of The Gnosis Archive website.

But enough of my drivel, as I like to say, and onto the first part of the interview with Lance (and you will find the audio version at end of this article). Jung and Tolkien and Gnostics…oh my!

 

MC: Thank you very much for joining Aeon Byte. Although most people would not make a connection between Jung and Tolkien—besides there being plenty of Jungian analysts of Tolkien— there seems to be many parallels to both giants of our times. You certainly point out a few in your excellent lectures at Gnosis.org. Perhaps the first one, or the main one—as you mention—is the similar experiences they both had before World War I. What were they, Lance?

LO: It’s a big question because, it’s a question about the nature of human imagination. It becomes apparent that Tolkien had a deep experience of the imaginal realm. We think of the imagination as something safely locked inside the cranium, and what we imagine is a mirror refiguring of images that have come to us through  sensory perception…with everything locked in that cranium has sort of come into it through our physical relationship to incarnation, shall we say.

The individuals who have a different perception, they encounter the imaginal as something independent—as a second reality that is independent of their experience. In other words, what comes to them through the imagination can include things that have not been part of their sensory perception. That are not locked within their cranium. It’s like the vision is a doorway. There’s a doorway, and one can look out into the world, and one can also look in that doorway and find as great an infinite reality. It’s a very strange concept. If one simply is locked in a flatlands world view where there’s only one reality, and it’s all material. This makes no sense. There are individuals who’ve had this experience of an inner reality. An imaginative reality. Tolkien most definitely was one, and Jung most definitely was one.

I think probably at this point in our culture, there are very few people who have not heard the name of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. Of the most published books in history, I think Lord of the Rings is up there near the top right now. Something like two hundred and fifty million copies in print, and then The Hobbit follows shortly thereafter.

So people are aware of Tolkien’s literary production. They’re aware of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit; but hardly any of that reading public is aware of what preceded those books. That this man had a 20 year engagement with an imaginal realm, and produced boxes upon boxes upon boxes of manuscript. Thousands of pages of manuscripts documenting his encounter with the imaginal. He saw the imaginal as a given thing. As a reality, as an independent truth. He did not feel that he was inventing anything. He repeats this again and again in his letters, in his private conversations, that his experience of the imaginal was an experience of a reality—a truth.

The stories that he was telling were not invented by him, they were translations of his experience of the imaginal. It’s a strange concept, but that is the depth that people perceive when the read The Lord of the Rings. There’s something deeper there.

When did this start for Tolkien? Well, it started around the time of the beginning of the first Great War. The World War I as we call it. Around the time 1914, Tolkien began having a sense of a deeper reality that was bidding him to explore it. He began having words coming to him. He called them “ghost words.” He would hear Elven words. Words in a language that he had not ever heard before. That no human had heard before. The words would come not just with sounds, but they would come with meaning. He began keeping records of these Elven words, trying to explore that vocabulary. The words didn’t just come. With the words there came stories. The Elven languages came complete with a mythology.

He had started probing at it before he himself entered the battle of World War I over a period between about 1914 and 1916. At that point the man is around twenty-one to twenty-four years old, and he doesn’t really know exactly what is going on [Laughter] other than it seems peculiar, and no one else seems to understand it. He thinks he perhaps is a poet, and some of his initial faerie mythology and some initial vision is written in poetic form. Then in 1916, Tolkien goes to the Battle of the Somme which was perhaps the most horrendous sacrifice of World War I. A half million men died in six months at the Battle of the Somme. Twenty thousand British soldiers died on the first day of battle—first day of July in 1916 alone. Amongst the men who died at the Somme were two of Tolkien’s three best friends. He was there for the entire battle. He was a signal officer working on the front lines trying to maintain communication with the rear, and he witnessed this sacrifice.

He came home from battle. In late October he became ill with a malady then known as trench fever. They didn’t know what caused it. The men came down with cyclical, recurrent fevers. Now we understand it was probably conveyed by the lice that infested the soldiers in the trenches. He came home with high fevers, and sick in November of 1916 to England. During that period in hospital, this imaginal realm really opened up. Certainly when he came home, there were times when he was actually suffering from high fevers. He may have even had some hallucinatory events, dream events during that period. That was not it alone. The fevers were not persistent, but he did spend several months off and on in hospital. Then many, many more months in convalescence where he didn’t have much to do. During that period he entered into an imaginal relationship, shall we say, with the Elven realm. He began hearing these incredible stories.

Once again, Tolkien’s sense was not that he was inventing them, but that he was actually hearing them. With them came the Elven tongues. When he got home in November of 1916—in 1916 to 1917 through 1918—he produced a series of stories. A series of imaginal investigations, shall we say, that are really the foundation of everything that followed. He encountered this realm as a given thing, to use his own words. He began recording these stories. He had no idea exactly where it was going. He didn’t understand if it was a literary work, if it was a poetic work, if it was anything that would ever be published. In fact, at the time this was entirely a private matter. He kept these things in notebooks.

The interesting thing, the question you asked to start is, well, how does this relate to Jung? The same thing happened to Jung at almost the same time. In 1913 Jung was a doctor of thirty-seven years of age, and had had a long period of relationship to Sigmund Freud. Had broken off that relationship, and he had understood that in the psyche, there was much more than simply the repressed material of our potty training, and our parental relationships that had gone wrong in youth. That this realm opened out into an infinity, and you realize that he had to meet it. He had to enter into it.

On the 12th of November of 1913, sat at his desk and petitioned his soul. “My soul, my soul, where are you?” is how he wrote his beginning. He sat for a month probing after some communication back from this imaginal realm. From his soul. He entered into what he called the mythopoetic imagination. The imaginative realm from which myth came, and he was looking for his myth. He was not trying to invent it, he was trying to discover it. Over a period of weeks he sat, and slowly words started forming. He started hearing phrases, and word forms.

By December of 1913, things absolutely broke open. He began having visions, full visions. He would sit, and he would actually see things, and he recorded them. Recorded these stories—these story fragments. This was the beginning of Jung’s Red Book. Originally these things were written in diaries known as The Black Books. Over the next—about ten years—he filled six Black Book journals with these events. From these he distilled a manuscript which then he transcribed into his Red Book. 

In 1913—this was before the war had erupted—he was having visions of the coming of a war. Amongst the visionary material he was having, there were many references to a great sacrifice that was about to come.

In England, Tolkien was in a very similar situation. He had gone to the Cornish coast in 1914. While there, he had a vision of one—Eärendil, he called him. It came as a poetic fragment. This word Eärendil—it had come to him from Middle English, and it had some intent. It seemed that this word had existed outside of history. That there was a story connected with it, and began trying to tell that story of Eärendil—one who had sailed into the Heavens with a gem of light. Then after the war broke out, and after Tolkien’s experience in the war, he came home and this imaginative realm opened up for him as well.

You have Jung in Zürich having these visions. This entry into the imaginal, into the mythopoetic imagination. Developing stories, feeling that there is an infinite reality there to be discovered. A given that must be discovered. Jung says that we perceive the outer reality as infinite, but that there’s a reality within just as infinite, and just as interesting, and just as important. That we are incomplete. We are only half until we encounter that lost, and forgotten other within us. That other half waiting to join into consciousness.

This experience of Jung is happening around the time of the Great War. He has images of sacrifices happening around Switzerland, and Tolkien is right there in the middle of the sacrifice. He sees it, he moves through it, he comes home, and he starts his own visionary experience.

If one doesn’t accept the fact that people can have visionary experiences, this is all balderdash. What the hell is going on here? [Laughter] It’s hard to get across to people. I remember how I was at a cocktail party talking to somebody about this. I think I mentioned this at one of the lectures. I was talking about the fact that Tolkien was having these auditory hallucinations— Elven words. He was hearing Elven languages. He was hearing from the Elves their stories, and he was writing them down. The lady said to me, “What you mean here is that Tolkien was crazy. Is that what you’re saying? Tolkien believed in Elves?” My response to that was: “Well no, Tolkien didn’t believe in Elves, Tolkien knew Elves.” He knew Elves by hundreds of names. He knew their history, he knew their stories, he knew their sorrows, and their joys. He knew the beauty of their art. He was discovering Elves, he was getting to know them.

The same thing goes with Jung. People say, “Well what was going on with him? He was having these visual hallucinations; was this a psychotic break? Was he mad? Was this an illness?” My answer to that is no, it wasn’t. The man continued to function in every normal fashion during this event, during the writing of what became The Red Book. He continued to see patients, on average five a day during these years 1914 through 1919 or so when he was having the visions. When he was writing the visionary material down. He was on active duty as an officer in the Swiss Army during this period for extended—in total of over half year on active duty—and was able to maintain his family function. Rather complex family function, should we add, at this time as well.

Tolkien was able to function in England when he was having these visions, when he was writing things down, when he was telling the stories. Some of the time he was definitely in hospital from the time he was sick and weakened by his illness, but he was able to function in every fashion outwardly.

This was an inner exploration which was not an impairment of rational function. In fact, it is a turning of rational function, a turning of rational attention—instead of outwardly to the activities of the world—inwardly to the activities of the imagination. So both of these guys were going through this intense experience at about the same time. Historically, there is a certain synchronicity there.

Even more interesting, I think many people have visions of sorts, or imaginations, or hear stories, and it’s interesting. Maybe they write it down, and then they go on with their lives. The difference here is that, what happened to Jung between these visionary experiences—I say “visionary” but I could also use the word “imaginal” or I could use the word “mythopoetic”— “myth creating.” These visions that had become the foundation of a life of work. Jung saw this visionary material that came to him between 1914 and 1920 as the precious stone that he did work for the rest of his life.

He spent the next 45 years trying to explain to the world, to people, to patients, the reality of the soul. The reality of the psyche. The reality of an inner world which was just as infinite as the outer. Which was not a result of it. Which was not simply the residue of it, but was an independent reality. In fact, it may come before—this imaginal realm—might come before outward perception. Then, he went and spent 45 years, the rest of his life, as an interpreter to people of this experience, of this reality. From it came his ideas of a collective unconscious. People once upon a time would say, “Well Jung got his theories of the collective unconscious from listening to the dreams of his patients, and correlating experiences, or from perhaps his own dreams.” Well, truth of the matter is, he got the concept by the experience of actually having gone into the imaginal realm and encountered these figures.

Tolkien, in parallel, had this imaginative experience begin in 1914 or thereabouts. Then break open in magnitude around November of 1916 after returning from the battle of the Somme, and over the next two to three years. He spent the next 40 years of his life further investigating, exploring, and developing this experience of the imaginal.

Both men struggled throughout their entire lives trying to explain what they had encountered, what they had seen, what they had experienced to others. Both struggled, shall we say, with limited success in that effort.

MC: Moving on, Lance, don’t you mention in your lecture briefly that the cosmology of Tolkien’s universe is very similar to a specific Gnostic myth? Which one is that?

LO: That becomes both an interesting, and a complex question. First of all you say, “Tolkien had a cosmology.” What was his cosmology? Where did that come from? People have read The Lord of the Rings and it’s like—is there a cosmology in The Lord of the Rings? [Laughter] Or in The Hobbit—is there a cosmology, is there cosmological vision? You start talking about things like that to people who know something about Tolkien, who have read some of his works and it’s like—what the hell is that about?

The point is: the writings that Tolkien produced are unknown. The things he wrote around the time of the First World War—his initial Silmarillion shall we say—these initial stories are not well known. There are a great number of things that Tolkien wrote that are yet unpublished but, material related to his visions, to his Elven stories…

MC: His own Red Book basically.

LO: Yeah, his own Red Book, and that’s exactly what he called it, you know?

MC: Really?

LO: That’s exactly what he called it.

MC: Oh my God!

LO: Yes, his Red Book. He worked for 20 years before The Lord of the Rings was engaged in: 1937-1938. He’d worked for 20 years creating this material. The Silmarillion was not a little book. There was a little book called The Silmarillion published a few years after Tolkien’s death—edited by his son Christopher—but this was just a very brief condensation of his mythology. As a matter of fact, Tolkien’s Silmarillion filled probably two or three file cabinets. The publisher, after Tolkien’s death, he had eight feet of stacked boxes that included his manuscripts of what was The Silmarillion.

Christopher Tolkien, his son, after J.R.R.’s death, had the task of trying to bring this stuff to publication. He initially published a very slim volume called The Silmarillion, which was a recension of some of the primary myths that Tolkien had told. The first of these is called The Ainulindalë. When you get into Tolkien text, this becomes a little bit complicated because many of the texts have Elven names. That’s how he heard them. Ainulindalë means, the music of the Gods.

Tolkien went through this initial series of visions. There were maybe three or four crucial myths that came to him—crucial stories. Stories that related to the origin of human consciousness, and to the origin of Elven consciousness. The origin of the Elves, and the relation of Elves and Men. The relation of these to the powers, to the emanations, to the Gods. There’s one called The Story of Gondolin, and there’s…well, I won’t go through all those three or four myths.

In 1919, after these initial three or four myths had come to him, he received a cosmogonic myth—as he calls it. A story of creation. A story that starts before the world, and tells the story of world creation. That’s relatively unusual, and these are the sorts of things that are the foundations of religions actually. Cosmogonic myths—how Gods form worlds, how God powers interact with human powers—are, for the most part, foundational stories of religions. Tolkien received just such a cosmogonic myth in The Ainulindalë. He sees in this story that he writes— the original text is about, probably ten pages. There is a good recension of it in the little book, The Silmarillion published. I think it was 1977.

In The Ainulindalë, he tells the story of a first force called Ilúvatar, who emanates several God forms called the Ainur. The Ainur come forth from his consciousness. His emanations of consciousness. Each one is a limited form of that consciousness. Each one is a piece of that consciousness, very much like some of the old Gnostic myths where you have the emanational structure of creation.

One of these emanations—whose name is Melkor—is an emanation of discord. Melkor adds—into the music of creation from which the cosmos flows forward—a tone, a song, a theme of discord. Creation itself comes forward from the force, and the song, and the music of the Gods singing. The cosmos is formed thereof. Melkor goes into the darkness. There is a void, in this initial creation myth, there is a void where the light of the Ilúvatar has not shined. There was a place behind the back, shall we say, of Ilúvatar. The first source. A place where his light, his vision has not gone.

Now think about that. It’s a duality. Here we have the first forming god, Ilúvatar, bringing forth emanations but, in that first force, in that first motive, in that first thought—that forethought—

there is a realm of unseen. A realm of unconscious, or a realm of unperceived. Melkor goes into that darkness, and goes probing for things. It is from that darkness that the discord is brought into the creation. Melkor becomes a force of that discord.

The story proceeds after the formation of the world. After the formation has taken place, the Ainur—the emanations of the first god—enter into creation. They actually come down into the world, and become what men would call gods. There’s not one, there are many and they all have their different elements. There’s Manwë, who is really the God of the Winds, the intelligence. He has a syzygy, a female companion, Varda, who is the Queen of Stars, the creator of the first lights. Readers of Lord of the Rings will remember her as Elbereth Gilthoniel, Star Queen, or Star Creator. To whom Sam prays when they meet Shelob in the caves of Cirith Ungol. There is a force of the water, Ulmo, who’s really a prophetic voice. There’s Aulë, who is a creator, a manipulator of matters.

These various emanations come into the world, and they have relationships with the children of the Ilúvatar. There are two types of children of Ilúvatar in the world. There’s the Human, and then there are the Elves. The whole drama has been set up before Elves or Humans awaken.

Now you asked, “What myth is this like?” I’d say, first of all, it’s a lot like most Gnostic creation mythologies in that it is emanational. That there is a first source. That first source emanates into a variety of powers—forces of different types—often referred to as children. That these enter into the direct relationship of creation. That they are demiurges—this is exactly the word that Tolkien uses. He refers to the Ainur as demiurges, demiurgic forces, forming forces. In this creation, a darkness enters in. A darkness of chaos. A darkness that would control the world, and order it to its own power, who is Melkor—this dark, chaotic force.

I’d say this myth has its most interesting focus of conjunction with the Manichean myth. In Mani’s myth, there is a realm of light. The realm of light is invaded by a dark force, by a force from outside of the light which hungers after the light. That is really the beginning of the whole cosmogonic story. The Manichean myth has a period of, before the mixing of the elements, during the mixing of the light and the dark, and a period that will happen after. We live in a period of the mixing. That’s cosmos. The entire Manichean myth sets a stage of what happened before cosmogenesis. Cosmogenesis itself is an effort to rescue the light from the mixing.

In the Manichean myth, the realm of light is invaded by a darkness. Into the darkness are thrown—sort of as a sacrifice, or as a battle plan—five of the sons of the God force. That’s the beginning of the mixing. These five children of light enter in through a mix in the darkness, are essentially consumed by the darkness, and thereby enter into the creation.

One sees some of this in Tolkien’s image. There’s no exact parallel. The point is, is that there is a mythopoetic imagination which is working with just these sorts of themes, which is really quite extraordinary.

MC: It’s very extraordinary. Beyond that, and beyond the evidence you showed us of how Tolkien entered into the world of archetypes, which I guess he called the Faerie world, and Jung took a similar journey, his world view seems to be eerily Gnostic. You do quote him in your lectures saying that he said, “We are free captives, undermining shadowy bars.” and that, “We’re trapped in a great artefact.”

LO: Yeah. One can look at Tolkien’s cosmogonic myth as a literary creation, but one must understand that Tolkien was drawing conclusions. Tolkien was discovering something in the imaginal and was then drawing conclusions from it about the nature of life, of human reality, about how we humans stand at this particular point in time. He came to see that indeed, we are imprisoned.

That particular story, that poem that you just quote, was written to C.S. Lewis in 1931. 1931 would be 12 years after the Ainulindalë has come—the music of the Gods, the creation myth—has come to Tolkien. He’s trying to indicate to C.S. Lewis, who at that time is relatively agnostic. He believes there may be a God, but he can’t see how the myth of Christ has anything to do with anything. Tolkien writes this long poem called Mythopoeia—the source of myth. He writes it from Philomythus to Misomythus: the lover of myth to the hater of myth. Himself being a lover of myth, Tolkien  being a hater. He goes through this very long, probably about 8 pages long poem, and double spaced. He gives exactly that sense, trying to explain creation he says:

 

[Yet] trees are not ‘trees’ until so named [and seen]

and never were so named, till those had been

whose speech’s involuted breath unfurled,

faint echo and dim picture of the world.  

He goes on to say that:

 

 

But neither record nor photograph,

being divination, judgment, and a laugh,

response of those that felt astir within

by deep monition movement that were kin

to life and death of trees, of beasts, of stars.

 

Then comes this description of who these people were. This image of the human consciousness says, “we are free captives, undermining shadowy bars” – “ free captives, undermining shadowy bars”—  isn’t that the key image of the exile in Gnostic mythology?

MC: Oh yeah…

LO: He says, “Digging the foreknown from experience, and panning the vein of spirit out of sense.” “Digging the foreknown from experience.” Well, what sort of experience is that? It’s the foreknown, that thing, that epinoia. That first knowledge is being dug from experience. What sort of experience? Imaginal experience. Experience of the inner realm.

Then he goes on, “Digging the foreknown from experience, and panning the vein of spirit out of sense.” Here we have this sensory perception of the outer world, but there is also a spirit. We pan that vein of gold, of spirit out of sense.

Then he goes on speaking of the evolution of human consciousness. He says, “Great powers they slowly brought out of themselves,”—speaking of mankind.

 

Great powers they slowly brought out of themselves,

and looking backward they beheld the Elves.

that wrought on cunning forges in the mind,

and light and dark on secret looms entwined.

 

He sees no stars who does not see them first,

of [living] silver made, that sudden burst

of flame like flowers beneath the ancient song,

whose very echo after-music long

has since pursued. There is no firmament,

only a void, unless a jeweled tent

myth-woven and elf-patterned; and no earth,

unless the mother’s womb, whence all have birth.

 

LO: So, the Heaven is just a void unless we see it as that jeweled, myth-woven tent. The inner reality of our imagination which gives meaning to that void of stars. We project out into that realm, our stories, the stories we tell, that myth-woven tent within which we reside.

So, he’s dealing with this mythology. He’s dealing with this sense of exile throughout his mythology. That sense of the Gnostic exile is very much present in all of Tolkien’s work.

2 Dream Sickles and a Circle

With dying and being reborn each moment you will be able to live life and you will be able to live death also. And that’s what spirituality is really all about: to live death intensely, to live life intensely; to live both so passionately that nothing is left behind unlived, not even death. If you live life and death totally, you transcend. In that tremendous passion and intensity of life and death, you transcend duality, you transcend the dichotomy, you come to the One. That One is really the truth. You can call it God, you can call it life, you can call it truth, samadhi, ecstasy, or whatsoever you choose.” -Rajneesh

I had a couple weird dreams last night that I can’t possibly accurately describe, but feel I have to try to, at least a little bit. I saw a circle that represented the Consciousness Field surrounding the earth. At the bottom was the masses, slumbering hypnotically through life, being slaves to a master they do not know and do not care to know. There was a small ever thinning stream going almost to the top of the circle that represented people in various degrees of wakefulness and awareness of the present situation in which we live. At the top was pure Consciousness and it was uninhabited by human beings, and was symbolized by a white empty space. I became aware that reaching that void at the top would be a state of not having any experience. This just doesn’t sound like much of a life to me. Evidently Consciousness wants and needs to experience it’s own awareness, therefore it creates people, and by doing this it evolves. Perhaps there’s a human that has reached the top, but they didn’t stay there. We all need to come back down to this ‘prison planet’ (which by the way is not a phrase the fear-monger Alex Jones invented, Timothy Leary was using it in the 60s), and play the game to some degree or we would not be human nor be manifested on the earth. Some think (or pretend) they are fully awake, and to me they come across as so heavenly good they are no earthly good at all. One cannot ‘live’ up there and function ‘down here.’ There are enlightened ones, but not people living in Nirvana, or bliss, or whatever it is that was represented as the top of the circle of pure Consciousness. We are but be a piece of Consciousness and are Consciousness while still being human. (I don’t know what any of this post is going to sound like, but I can assure you though that yes, I’m not “normal” – lol) …

Prisoner to what? A man made matrix created from man’s lower animal ego (which we all own). The Gnostics called it the demiurge. I don’t need to explain the matrix to you, my finely tuned in reader. We have been rewired from birth to serve as slaves to a few ruling elite bloodlines. There’s a hundred posts that goes in to detail about this matrix on this blog. It’s not as real as it seems and nothing to fear.  I consider it a game. Some are aware it’s a game, and some are so fully engaged in the game they don’t realize it’s a game. That is a nonjudgmental fact. Live and let live is all one can do, but for Consciousness to evolve, this lower ego has to be mastered. I absolutely think we can de-evolve, but we’d just return in 4 million years or so. But despite the seemingly overwhelming odds more and more are “waking up” to the fact that we are being lied to and manipulated while certain truths are being suppressed. (I’ve noticed recent false flag operations that failed to work as well as they would have, say 30 years ago). A small sign of hope? Hell yeah!

I then had a dream I was on the top floor of a high-rise looking down on the street watching a protest. In the dream the government decided to admit it’s guilt  and tell the truth about itself and what it was really about. The protesters were carrying signs that read “Please keep lying to us!” They were protesting against knowing the truth. I watched without emotion, only an intense interest and a kind of bewilderment. Maybe even a touch of WTF. You’d have had to be there to understand. There’s a photon with an information packet of these dreams imprinted on it, maybe you can find it floating about on the astral plane.

I don’t have the pleasure of remembering all my dreams, but these were unforgettable and very psychedelic.  If you’ve ever tripped you know it’s impossible to convey the experience in words, though you’re still compelled to try. Did some of this make any sense? I better go drink some coffee. Doooooooooooods!! It’s still all very groovy. Wake and bake …

Inner silence is the key to penetrating this core of knowledge in the universe.

Human beings are like onions. We have layers which are mental/emotional energetic layers within us with obscure our genuine self. As children and babies we have no layers. We are pure and unadulterated infinite consciousness. Then as we are filled with information over time, this clutters up our mind and we lose awareness of our inner truth and our natural ability of processing energy (emotional processing) is diminished or halted altogether and we start to form layers and layers of ego.

Ego is our separate, individual identity that manifests itself in contradiction to our universal self. It is formed out of necessity in order to deal with all of this information/energy which we have taken in, but have not processed properly.

This is directly related to our educational system, and how we have learned to live and perceive the world from our parents, teachers, the media, and basically everyone that we have met, simply by observation.

To dissolve the layers of the ego over time we need only to learn to live from inner silence instead of mind.

And by doing so we tap into our innate intelligence, our inner truth, and knowledge will begin to come through us directly from the field. As information comes through us the reverse happens: instead of layers forming that hold us in, our energy radiates, penetrates these layers, pushes them to the surface, and ultimately dissolves them.

When we learn in this fashion we are free to learn from external sources such as books and so on, but eventually we won’t even need those and we will be able to channel all information directly from source. Which is where all books, movies, songs, works of art, and ideas came from anyway.

This shift will not take hundreds or thousands of years, but will occur within a few generations … and this shift has already been underway dramatically for the past century. Just look at how the world has changed. We already see this evolution taking place right now within all individuals.

The information age is occurring now just outside of ourselves, but also within ourselves. We went from print, to being able to download information (books, movies, you name it) from the internet wirelessly in a few short decades. Now in this internal information age we are also going from print to being able to download information within ourselves from the galactic internet also within a few short decades.

All those alive have the potential to make this shift within ourselves if we commit to a meditative, energetic, and consciousness raising practice.

As the energetic layers of your ego are pushed to the surface and dissolved through this practice, you will find not only more intelligence, power, imagination, and stupendous learning and creative abilities within you, you will also resonate more with truth itself. Then you will become completely open to the universe, and the universe will be completely open to you, and we will be one.

Interpreting Energy Through Inner Silence

In order to do this, above all we must empty ourselves and become acutely aware of what is taking place within us. This is done by cultivating inner silence. When we become fixated by the idea of learning from external sources of information as the only way to learn, as we all have been to a certain degree by our educational conditioning, then we disregard the wisdom and true knowledge that is inherent within us all.

There is wisdom and knowledge inherent within each of us, but in order to access it we must unlearn everything that we have learned. We must become open in order for this knowledge to become apparent to us. We do not need to read thousands of books in order to discover this understanding. Just a select few of the right ones in order to make those necessary shifts in our perception along the way. What is more important is that we embody these new perceptual understandings and experience them through inner silence.

When we learn to download information from the field, what we are dealing with primarily is energy. Everything has energy. In fact, everything is energy. And within the energy of everything (from books, to music, to art, to another human being) lies encoded all information about that thing. I believe we can get to a point where we do not need to read a book, we can simply hold the book, feel its energy, and by feeling that energy we can perceive all the information of the book which is encoded within it’s energy.

Much like conversations are encoded within energy to be transmitted through vacuum energy into your cellphone, the same is already true with everything. Everything in the universe radiates energy at a specific frequency and all that there is to know about that thing is encoded within that energy wave.

With our technology we can detect the frequency of objects in the universe, but only with our consciousness can we interpret and decode the information within that energy.

The energy of everything is radiated into the vacuum, and it is available everywhere simultaneously. To read this energy, we must become subtle through inner silence to allow these impressions to become consciously available to us.

It is not a practice of working hard, because the harder we think we have to work to achieve something, the lower the level of consciousness we are operating from and attempting to manifest from. You see, we are already doing this all of the time. This is what our thoughts are. We are tuning ourselves as vibrational beings to a certain frequency with our perception, and then the thoughts that manifest within us from the infinite intelligence of the universe are thoughts which are of the same frequency as the frequency we are tuned to.

To download new information from the field, tune yourself to a higher frequency.This new information will effectively give us a brand new experience of life, of reality, and it will also give us the perception of downloading information from the field because the thoughts and ideas that will come to us will be so new and truly inspiring and intelligent that we may conclude that we are downloading information from the field. But in reality we will be tapping into what was already available inside of us all along.

As Bruce Lipton put it, “we are part of the field being downloaded into our minds and bodies”. We don’t realize that we are already downloading information from the field in each moment because for the most part we are operating at ordinary levels of consciousness.

We are doing the same things day in and day out and we are keeping up a steady stream of thoughts that narrate our life story and the nature of our world to us perpetually. What we have to do is break that narrative with inner silence, and as soon as we open up these gaps we will find new information coming through us.

Cultivate Inner Silence

Raising our vibration and downloading information from the field can therefore be summed up as a singular intention: cultivate inner silence.

It is not something which we achieve, rather, it is something which we accumulate over time. Each moment spent in inner silence builds our reservoirs of inner silence which are never depleted, and which we can always access repeatedly. And the more time we spend in inner silence, the easier it becomes to access this internal state.

From this place of inner silence which is really the experience of ultimate receptivity to the universe, we will over time become so empty that we will reflect the universe in all that we do and in all that we are. By seeking inner silence we do empty ourselves; we empty ourselves of all of the pettiness, anger, self-importance, and worry that defines our ego.

And by emptying ourselves of all that lower energy, we become available for the higher energy of the universe. For we are vibrational beings and when we cease to hold lower energies in our bodies and minds, all that is left is more positive energies which resonate with the higher levels of energy/information in the universe and thus we manifest them. We manifest them in our minds as thoughts, in our bodies as health, and in our lives as abundance, success, and prosperity.

This is the power of inner silence.

All Information is Available Within You

As I briefly touched on in Learning from Within, one of the most important shifts in our self-image and our beliefs which we can make is to begin seeing ourselves as vibrational beings, and understanding that we are not containers for knowledge, but we are knowledge itself.

The universe is defined by a collapse to singularity, and therefore everything in the universe is part of that infinite curvature. (Black Whole Dynamics) As such, everything is one. And because we are energetic extensions of this field, we are literally everything, and we have access to all information in the universe, through ourselves.

Everything that we know is not stored in our brain, but within our mind-field which is non-local. Therefore it is not within us, and if we continue to go off of the assumption that the only way in which to learn anything is from an external source (a book, a movie, speaker) we are denying the most fundamental nature of ourselves and the universe.

The universe is energy, and everything that we have learned is recorded in the universe by our minds as pure energy. When we recall something all that we are doing is tuning ourselves to that energy, and then it appears in our minds. Therefore if we can tune ourselves to new energies spiritually through inner silence and simply becoming available for the universe, we can tune ourselves to any thoughts, ideas, and knowledge that exist in the universe.

The main principle is alignment. This is what we are doing when we sit quietly in meditation: aligning with the universe. If we could train ourselves to sit quietly every day, and refrain from the distractions of television, movies, society at large, and even the majority of our interactions with other people at least for a while, we will naturally come into alignment with ourselves and the universe.

And the end result of this process is that we will clear out all of that disturbance within our mind-field and dissolve the layers of our ego, and we will channel the information, knowledge, and creative self-expression that is unique to us as an individual expression of the universe, and we will call this being ourselves.

Possibly for the first time.

Belief vs Gnosis

Yup, I’m going there again. Always my most unpopular posts are about the Jesus myth. This says more about the masses than this little post could ever say. I’m not politically correct and do not care if I hurt someone’s feelings. Feelings are the problem. OK, I believe that the mythical Jesus Christ being changed to an historical person was a deliberate Roman political invention to be used as a diversion and/or distraction that keeps humanity from true spirituality, and from working on and evolving our own souls. The fictitious character of “Jesus” was invented from spiritual CONCEPTS originating in the Far East, such as spiritual alchemy, the kundalini energy, Buddhism, Krishna, and what is known as the “vril” “chi” “life-force” and Astrotheology STORIES from the Old Testament. Judaism was very astrological. This bit about the exoteric story hiding the esoteric from the ”profane” is a bit of nonsense. It wasn’t until the Inquisition drove the true message underground that it became esoteric. I believe it was at one time common knowledge that these myths meant something much deeper than the Vatican would allow people to know, that we are Gods, we are the Jesus character and by following his Initiation example we would become aware that we are indeed ”God.” Truth be known, one saves one’s own soul through advancing spiritually. In this way I think Jesus is a mystical representation of each of us, but this Christian god-man, along with biblical Literalism, is a deterrent to gnosis of the mystery and therefore keeps humanity from doing anything spiritually, keeping mankind enslaved to living a totally material existence, separated from God, nature and everything else (even each other). Christians cannot argue with this, because they do not know true spirituality. They have not experienced it. They are programmed to ”feel” Jesus as an emotional truth and become trapped in the Empirical political/material deception.

Once one’s eyes are opened and one is aware of the black magick concept, they can clearly and easily see how and why this Literalism/Orthodoxy was invented, but those with fear based egos and beliefs will never see it. That is just the way it is. (And I guess that’s OK, although as a member of the human race I think we’d evolve quicker if beliefs were replaced with knowledge and fear replaced with love). I also think the art of meditation should be taught in school, but I don’t see that happening any time soon. Most parents probably don’t meditate thus wouldn’t be able to teach it to their kids, but what a better world it would be if it was a part of daily life in the whole world. Those who are a member of the mainstream, and who take network news as gospel truth (pun intended) are too involved in the fictional game of life to experience intuitive knowledge. These people are great in number and an angry bunch, prepared to kill for their belief in their ”loving” God. As George Carlin said: “Our God has a bigger dick than your God.” These people will use the most ridiculous arguments to ”save jesus” from the trash can. They don’t understand how history is invented, dates are incorrect and that their brains are thoroughly washed by the thought police.

The fictitious character of Jesus Christ:

The “Jesus saves” baloney [ad nauseum] and the “born again” phrases have been twisted and incorporated into this fictitious Matrix (Or paradigm, or culture. Words are always just symbols so take all this with a grain of salt, but not literally with a grain of salt, that would be …. weird). In other words, deluded ones have been deceived into believing this Jesus character will take care of everything spiritual as long as they conform to the ”agenda.” This deters one from working on one’s own spirituality. There is nothing at all spiritual about this Jesus thing, or the Roman invented Christian program. It’s emotional ego crap, and somewhat arrogant to think a God loves you and all you have to do is pray to another person (Jesus) that He (God) killed to forgive you from sins that He Himself created, but only if you stroke His massive ego with meaningless ritual and worship. Prayer doesn’t work, there’s no one to pray to, meditation is what works. Intent, intuition, self improvement takes work on one’s self from a position of knowledge, not belief. Consider one who does good because they believe it’s the right thing to do. They’re still doing something good, right? But is it coming from the heart or from a belief? If one knows that actions here will effect their future karma and the evolvement of the Consciousness of the human race, rather than just acting on belief, how much better the good deed will be.

The “Jesus” character has acted as the thought police for ultimate control. Wars have been fought repeatedly over beliefs and ideas. When the enemy controls what is in the mind of humanity, the enemy then controls humanity.

Since Jesus is fictitious, he can be anything to anyone. He is whatever the current system claims and dictates. He changes with the times and conforms to any agenda, with the Bible which that has verses and contradictions to suit any argument or purpose. (See the oldest bible, the Sinai Bible, to view for yourself  later additions, many omissions, editing, and interpolations that suited the dogma of the times).  The ancient wisdom of that day was hijacked by politics and rewrote. What the ancient teaching were about is really not important as far as us learning any actual truths from them. They are mythical literature from days gone by. Truly we can write a new myth and live our own gospel in the present time. (I like the simulated reality/virtual reality analogy presented by Tom Campbell, Peter Russell and other scientists breaking away from mainstream science dogma and talking about their experience with Consciousness.

Gnosis is a word that is beyond man’s ability to define — and it indicates Spiritual Knowledge revealed directly to man by ‘God’ (I am beginning to have issues with the word God. It never bothered me before because I knew what it meant to me, and understood it meant something else to others. I just dealt with that fact, but now I feel it’s a word that is harmful and shouldn’t be tossed about as if there really was an egotistical entity that is the one and only God. I prefer Consciousness to God. Consciousness doesn’t have an ego, doesn’t need to be worshipped and is not separated from us). As for the bible, gnosis cannot be conveyed to another in a book. It can’t be taught by one person to another. Gnosis was deliberately suppressed by the Church. Gnosis has nothing to do with the wisdom of this world. It is impossible to study Gnosis in a school, college or university. The Gospel of Thomas portrays this world as dwelling in a state of abject poverty, because the wisdom of this world is devoid of the essential elements of what can be portrayed as Higher Spiritual Knowledge — the ‘Divine Manna of the Kingdom’ — or, in the Greek language what is portrayed as Gnosis.

It is impossible to enter the Kingdom in the manner that the Orthodox church teaches, without possessing the Knowledge of one’s true self and your relationship to Creator-God-Consciousness and receiving Knowledge (Gnosis) directly from Consciousness. The original objective of the Gospels was to alter and evolve the Initiate’s mind and body in the process of spiritual transformation that would enable the Initiate to achieve and bring about the necessary subsequent stages of birth — to learn directly from Source (instead of dependency on the organized church) — and become restored as a child of Consciousness, or whatever you want to call it. (In fact the Church had no other choice than to do this as it would have quickly died without using deception, murder, genocide, torture and trickery – but like the Scribes and Pharisees they are truly not needed and better off avoided. They just don’t want YOU to know they aren’t needed. For fellowship, join a poker club or something less mundane than Church). You can learn from wiser people without making them gods. How can any other human being be better than yourself? Give me a break!

“I will corrupt your seed and spread dung upon your faces!” (Malachi 2:3)

In fairness, there is a spiritual meaning to these and other such quotes, but Literalism kills spirituality. Saul calls it ”the Letter that killeth.” Jesus tried to convey this and was crucified by religion and politics. Stupid ass Rome left some hidden treasures in the bible, too bad Christians don’t get it. LITERALISM KILLS SPIRITUALITY! To this day the Church does not pay taxes, they’re in bed with govern (means control) ment (means mind). Government by literal definition means ”mind control.” I mean how ”in your face” does it have to get?  Orthodox religions serve the Machine only, and the Machine is broken and hell bent on destruction. It’s a mass of ego induced lunatics with a perverted world view driving us all over the cliff. Counter culture always worked best for me. So yes, I went there again. No Historical Jesus as described in the bible ever lived ;) And remember, Jesus was a Greek name, it was never a Hebrew/Aramaic name. Now a days, when people pray to Jesus, they’re praying to some guy in Puerto Rico. How lame is that?
 
I end with;
Amen (Ra) Amen and Amen-Ra, Egyptian Gods. They still use the Egyptian God’s name to end a prayer to a fictional person, this cracks me up. Life is a comic book.

The questions that have remained timeless and profound throughout history have been all but left for dead. For the first time in history we are finding that there are no sole saviors or lone prophets to guide us, but a whole race waking from a sleep that has brought this world to the brink of destruction. In a world where Apocalyptic catastrophes seem inevitable, we must look at the solutions in a whole new manner.

As the latest quantum mechanics and metaphysics are just being discovered, we notice that we are not moving forward, but returning to a consciousness that the ancient shamans, mystics and sages have left for us.

The Gnosis of Bill Donahue

Bill has a great grasp for turning the scriptures of orthodoxy into modern science. He reads with the spiritual eye and he reads between the lines. This different way to read the bible happened to me quite by accident in 1988 while bedridden waiting for the first of several spine surgeries (of course nothing actually happens by accident). I read the bible from cover to cover in 3 months, and in no way did a literal translation ever enter my mind. Even the boring instructions for building the temple section made sense to me, as it resembled the human psyche perfectly. The ”holy of holies” being the seat of Consciousness, the Ark was the body, the escape from Egypt was the escape from the Matrix. This was my first spiritual experience. It was just amazing!

I’ve never heard Bill call himself a Gnostic, though he has lectured on the subject. If he taught 300 years ago he would certainly have been burned at the stake as a Gnostic Heretic. He teaches that Jesus is the sun, and then so much more. His mysticism is inspiring. “God is Light, therefore God is a photon,” teaches Bill. He always talks a lot about the Pineal Gland and meditation and uses bible references to prove his point. He has no dogmatic belief system (beliefs are knowledge gaps filled in with false beliefs, ignorance is a better word) and he’s constantly attacked by mainstream Christians who paradoxically believe only their belief (ignorance) represents the Love of the One True God. Makes me wonder…

Gnosis is Experiential Intuitive Knowledge. True gnosis cannot be learned through study but only through experiencing its reality. This is the reason gnostic texts say,

”Don’t seek the Law [“the Law” refers to the Divine Reality (Consciousness) which is behind the illusions of mortal existence] only in your scriptures, for the Law is Life, whereas, the scriptures are only words. Holy Wisdom (gnosis), you give us the understanding that unfolds continuously and endlessly, yet is not acquired through the study of the scriptures, but through the study of Light.”

How can our minds be transformed so that we perceive the Reality in which we exist instead of the illusions of mortal existence? There is no simple answer to this question. Briefly stated it is ignorance that keeps us in bondage to the archons [psychological forces] of mortal existence. Gnosis dispels ignorance, freeing us to undertake and complete the process of deification, the development of our ultimate potential. With this understanding I take the liberty of calling Bill a modern Gnostic, though some of his fans may prefer mystic and he may prefer neither. (Gnostic and mystic implies the same thing to me, as does the ‘not yet mainstream’ science that teaches that Consciousness is the only reality). Gnosis is the power of salvation. Our need is to be saved from the ignorance that traps us in lives based on the illusion of separateness. In their unnatural state (which appears to be the natural state), mortals perceive themselves as separated from the Divine and from the world around them. As long as they base their decisions on this illusion of separateness, they will act contrary to the Divine Nature. This type of inappropriate conduct ties them to darkness, and the nature of darkness is destruction. To be saved from the powers of darkness, we must become enlightened to perceive the Reality of which we (and everything else) are manifestations so that we can exist in that Reality. Whatever helps bring about this Awakening is welcome into my reality, and hopefully yours, as that’s the only purpose of this blog. I would love to have everyone question the false religions that have caused so much suffering in the world. It’s the misunderstanding of religion which leads to the belief that one not only ‘knows’ something, but they ‘know’ the only truth in the universe, which makes them God’s chosen and the only ones worthy of living. It is that separation of humanity which I despise in mainstream religion/politics, and wordly way of ”living”. I’ve been leaving a lot of what in the beginning of this blog was a lot of Gnosticism, mythicism and mysticism behind as I’ve been reading a lot of new, or suppressed, science and Theory’s Of Everything (I.E. Tom Campbell) coming from still hidden/suppressed quantum physics. These scientists say the same things the oldest ancient Vedic  scriptures say, except for changing the word God to Consciousness and demiurge/devil to ego. God almost implies a separate Being, which is just not possible. The All is in the All, therefore I Am.

Gnosis (Greek for knowledge) is the means of escape from the darkness of the mortal condition. Ignorance of Reality keeps us trapped in this state; knowledge of Reality shows us the means of escape from its limitations. Knowledge removes the blocks in our minds that prevent us from viewing this Reality so we can develop our divine potential to begin living our lives on a plane above the illusions of mortal existence, above the fear based ego illusions. Remove the fear and ignorance and only Love remains, which is the natural state of Being that we are evolving into (or returning to).

Think about this, even bacteria seem to be smarter than humans right now. Bacteria survive by working together as a community. When we finally have as much Consciousness as bacteria, we too will thrive as a community working together, rather than competing with each other. (Sarcasm intended)….lmao

The Dalai Lama and Buddhist Science

Why does consciousness seem to complicate reality? – A question that arose in my mind upon hearing that His Holiness the Dalai Lama was coming to England to spread his teachings of non-violence. The Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, was visiting Manchester to share his wisdom and knowledge, something which he has dedicated his life to doing around the world. Despite leading a life of peace, he has had his share of drama, being in exile since 1959, due to the Chinese government taking over Tibet. Since losing their country, Tibetans have stayed loyal to the Dalai Lama, claiming that they feel alone without him – a bond between a leader and his people we rarely see today. Both have been pleading honorably for Tibet’s independence. Furthermore, the Dalai Lama has been trying to establish a democratic system of governance, speaking with countless world leaders. Parallel to this His Holiness works for the promotion of moral values, harmony and respect for religions throughout the world; not preaching on Buddhism, but teaching how to promote inner happiness and Buddhist science, to which many people take an interest. I had the pleasure of participating in several talks by His Holiness over a period of four days.

I joined a news conference on the morning of his arrival. It’s not every day you see a Buddhist monk being exposed to apprehensive press taking 100 pictures a second. However, like a true Zen master, he seemed barely distracted. I thought how, if every person in the room was of a calmer nature, this would have given him a warmer welcome to a more enlightened country, but then this country thrives off media consumerism.

Immediately, he expressed the purpose of his visit: to spread his message of non-violence, the value of dialogue, universal responsibility and expressing his views on modern education:

“We should implement the teachings of compassion, tolerance and forgiveness by teaching scientific moral education not based on religious beliefs. This has the potential to bring harmony to the basis of human life on all levels. Furthermore, I will be talking about the nature of reality; such as what is really happening in any situation at a fundamental level.”

However, like a true Zen master, he seemed barely distracted. I thought how, if every person in the room was of a calmer nature, this would have given him a warmer welcome to a more enlightened country, but then this country thrives off media consumerism.

Immediately, he expressed the purpose of his visit: to spread his message of non-violence, the value of dialogue, universal responsibility and expressing his views on modern education:

“We should implement the teachings of compassion, tolerance and forgiveness by teaching scientific moral education not based on religious beliefs. This has the potential to bring harmony to the basis of human life on all levels. Furthermore, I will be talking about the nature of reality; such as what is really happening in any situation at a fundamental level.”

Everyone laughed when he used an example of the press, saying that they may all seem pleasant, but at a more fundamental reality, they could just be looking for gain and money.

“I am not here to popularize the Buddhist religion but to respect all religions. The 20th century was one of violence; the 21st century should be one of dialogue. Why do we not see the world as one entity rather than separate places of people… wouldn’t this diminish the violence?”

Afterwards, questions were asked by the press. To my curiosity, the questions all came off the topic of what he was talking about. All the questions were about economic problems and the conflict between him and China. Although these may be concerning issues in mainstream modern news, I felt that they could have found the answers they were looking for through the objective attitude that the Dalai Lama was displaying. Nevertheless, every answer was expressed in a highly detached manner:

“Despite being in a world of tough economic times each must lead a life of compassion.”

Afterwards, he came down to have a handshake with the press. As he approached me, he gave me a two-handed handshake and looking at my dreadlocks, he asked what kind of hairstyle I had. Everyone laughed. Noticing my appearance he asked where I originated from; I replied that my mum came from the Philippines. He remained silent for a moment looking into my eyes. I felt a tranquil presence come over me, and then he proceeded. The intellect and true power of this man was apparent. I was very excited for the next three days of his upcoming teachings to the masses.

The first event was free to ages 15-25. It filled over 10’000 seats in Manchester’s MEN Arena. The Dalai Lama was presented to the stage by actor and comedian Russell Brand; the Dalai Lama entered with a happy, humorous nature and received a lively loving audience. He was impressed with the amount of people who turned up. During his talk, he touched on many subjects including: the reason behind why our species is lacking from compassion and happiness, “Most unhappiness comes from the sense of self-importance and self-centeredness;” how to use dialogue rather than violence; and the relationship between thinking and emotions. Moreover, he expressed how we can perceive ourselves and everyone else on different levels of identity and significance. Using himself as an example, he said that on one level, he was a cellular human. However, on the subsequent level, he is a man, then on the next level, he is a Buddhist Monk, and finally, comically expressing – he is the Dalai Lama. In the laughter of the audience, I felt anyone who was expecting a boring preaching session was in-fact delighted to find such an amusing and honest man. He spoke about things which we could all relate to as human beings.

“For us to live harmoniously we must live and conceptualize compassionately with the ‘human level’ of experience. In this way, we cultivate an authentic realistic way of being, expanding consciousness to finer levels of experience, moving us away from a level of consciousness that emotionally attaches itself to identities, for instance, thinking of ourselves as being greater or inferior to others, which can limit deeper levels of relationship.”

He emphasized the importance of cultivating an ‘analytical mind-set’ to develop our sense of skepticism about all things and to think reasonably, scientifically and morally. He went on to say there are two types of meditation. Firstly, stabilizing meditation – which focuses on nothingness, awareness and healing. This allows you to become devoid of mind, which is known as ‘clear light’ or ‘luminosity’ in Buddhism. This purity of mind is Nirvana and gives way to expanse of mind and consciousness. The other type of meditation is analytical meditation – which he explained is the key to understanding, and we do it as part of our nature such as when we are studying or contemplating life. This certainly shed some light for me on distinguishing the types of awareness in everyday life.

“However, it is easy to misinterpret reality. The analytical mind can come to a distorted way of knowing. At the root of all distorted perception is ignorance. An example of this would be of people who perceive impermanent things to be permanent, i.e. material objects. In doing so, we can become attached to things whether it be material or thought forms.”

An interesting fact which struck me: a scientist, with whom the Dalai Lama spoke, said that there are an estimated six billion different perceptions about the world, all defying each other. So how can we know which ones are factual? He said to cultivate what he calls the ‘ultimate perception of reality’, we must question and contradict every view we have with defying ones to come to a more realistic, natural way of knowing.

Another event with the Dalai Lama was named ‘Being western – being Buddhist’ and included a panel of 5 western Buddhist practitioners. This was a Q&A event about any aspect of Buddhism. The panel was surprised to find such a large audience. They only expected a few hundred people to turn up but over 4,000 participated. It is obvious that Buddhist interest is flourishing at an accelerating rate in the western world. One of the answers which caught my attention was from a man who told a story that he once took a group of Monks through a prison where he worked. As they walked through, the prisoners hurled abuse at them, and the man said to the Monks that this must be the worst place to practice Buddhism. In fact, they replied saying it is a perfect place to practice, adding that the best place to practice is in a place of suffering, and the prison was abundant in suffering. A significant message I thought. We conceptualize spirituality as different from everything else. It seems that we are unable to learn vital information from all things. As long as humanity continues to identify all experience as separate, we ignore the fact that all experience can be our spiritual teacher, not just school, books or going to see the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama had also expressed this when he said:

“We should pay particular compassion to people that we wouldn’t usually take a liking to, i.e. criminals, people who get shunned in community. As well as this we should see close relations (who give us pain and suffering) as spiritual teachers in order to analyze experiences. For example, during an argument, check to see if there is any intelligent thinking going on rather than just defensive emotion.”

I think people who participated in these events who had a general problem with religions were surprised to find the Dalai Lama talking about the negative sides of religious beliefs such as God. He also expressed his attitude towards his religion, which I found very viable for all religious people:

“I am Buddhist, but there is no attachment to Buddhism, if there is attachment you become biased; you start to become suspicious about other faiths and start to close your mind to other possibilities. It’s very helpful to have the ability to appreciate other faiths as well as your own.”

After three days of the Dalai Lama connecting, laughing, philosophizing, articulating universal energy, he went on to his next destination in the UK to spread his light.

Why must the Dalai Lama travel across the world discussing our problems? Why does consciousness complicate reality? Are we fooling ourselves for a reason, a purpose? Do we really know deep within ourselves the ultimate truth? Where does common sense originate from? An ‘all-knowing source’? If it is, then we surely have all the answers we need within ourselves. However, it seems evident that the human race currently lives through a perception far-off the ‘cellular human level’ as we tend to seek spiritual understanding from sources we regard as ‘spiritual’. You could say the Dalai Lama was not teaching, but reminding people of what we already know. How have we lost this simple universal wisdom that he was expressing? Are our habitual ego-driven minds holding us back from seeing the truth?

Did you know that there is an inherent nervous system within the heart made up of 40000 neurons similar to brain neurons? Research shows it can learn, remember, feel and sense independently. Maybe in this ‘brain in the heart’ lies the simple universal truth of compassion that the Dalai Lama was expressing.

During the first event, a video of a Mayan woman was played to the audience before the Dalai Lama was presented to the stage. She spoke about her people who predicted an era of peace and harmony around the year 2012. The possibility struck me that the Dalai Lama also sensed this shift happening. Is he going around the world to accelerate the process of the evolution in consciousness? Only time will tell.

After the four days, I was left with a great sense of admiration for the Buddhist religion. Cultivating a fully awakened mind benefits all fellow sentient beings, and as long as every sentient being endures suffering, the practice of Buddhism will remain to dispel and endure the miseries of the world. However, I think that once humanity reaches a tipping point in the awakening of the human psyche, it will flourish in a sense of connectivity, expansion, abundance and purpose.
